WEARY BYSTANDERS

We believe that international media has given way to a misrepresentation of the state of Mexico’s War on Drugs. This certainly has a bearing on the economy, international cooperation, and the position of Mexico in the international community. We also believe that this manipulation is frequently upheld in bad faith.
The aim of our news observatory is to reach out to a larger audience, and grant international access to the thriving, yet sometimes localized, critical journalism on the current situation in Mexico.

Much has been said on how one of the better strategies to bring down the cartels would be focusing more on attacking their finances. The Slate’s article “Narco Economics: A new study that could help Mexico win its war on drug traffickers” by Ray Fishman discusses the market-oriented approach to combat drug trade related violence from the perspective of a paper in forensic economics by MIT student Melissa Dell. Her work analyzes the less obvious economic behaviors through the already evidenced outbursts of violence, bringing governance and cost-benefit market analysis to the picture.

by Juan Carlos Guerra   *The following is an analytical account of a video provided by the - thought awakening channel [http://www.youtube.com/user/thoughtawakening] – that refers to the United States Army’s abuses abroad, and in particular - in its participation in what has been termed ‘Humanitarian Intervention and Regime Change’ policy, which has been gathering steam lately, as seen in the most recent Libyan attacks and the assassination of its leader.   This should be seen as a warning in Mexico, as the country’s current socio-political situation is fertile ground for similar US interventions. Mexico should be wary of the ‘benign’ intentions of its neighbour in trying to fix issues - ranging from narco trafficking to insecurity and social breakdown.

The Observer’s editorial, “The war on drugs and the shameful silence of our politicians” intends to probe whether there is a will in today’s political leaders to seriously consider reviewing 40 years of a prohibitionist strategy, calling into question the British Parliament (House of Lords) and heads of state for refusing to attend a summit where the topic was to be discussed.   Clearly, as the article states, politicians know that there needs to be a serious discussion about the current strategy, but they are not willing to risk any political leverage to lead it or motivate the groundbreaking analysis.  This is regarding the global nature of the problem, and the way that what is global seems to be hurting…
