WEARY BYSTANDERS

We believe that international media has given way to a misrepresentation of the state of Mexico’s War on Drugs. This certainly has a bearing on the economy, international cooperation, and the position of Mexico in the international community. We also believe that this manipulation is frequently upheld in bad faith.
The aim of our news observatory is to reach out to a larger audience, and grant international access to the thriving, yet sometimes localized, critical journalism on the current situation in Mexico.

Andrés Martínez’s article “You may want to ignore Mexico” on Zócalo Public Square touches on the subject of U.S.A. media view of Mexico’s strategic importance. The article brings up interesting points that question the perceived small role of Mexico in American media. With the terrible death of Secretary of the Interior, Blake Mora, Martínez realizes once more that the Mexican United States don’t seem to pop up on the radar with the relevance that he deems appropriate.   Regardless of whether the situation is due to carelessness, ignorance, or some sort of strategic agenda, United States media obliviousness to the complex situation of their neighbor country is shockingly appalling. Human Rights Watch has just issued a report “Neither Rights Nor Security: Killings, Torture, and Disappearances in Mexico’s ‘War on Drugs,’” based on information from Baja California, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Tabasco, and Nuevo León, on how the armed forces and police corporations are containing criminality from the ‘War on Drugs’.  The video we post here focuses mainly on the case of Gustavo Acosta Luján, who was gunned down by marines last September just as he opened the door of the house in which he was taking care of his ill father.

This Grassrooots Press piece, “Mexican Authorities Crack Down on Protests” gives a view of the context of repressive activity to human rights activists who are have been persistent in their work despite great odds.  It should be said that, unfortunately, the need to denounce and counter human rights violations of this war on drugs came at a time when civil society was fragmented due mainly to an underlying historical consciousness of the repression of social movements.  It has been the phenomenon of collective pain that began to awaken many sectors of civil society held back by fear of a variety of means of dissuasion.  (Public expressions of inconformity are crucial to achieve unification and build up the capacity of organized…
